SE KS administrators object to school bills

“‘These are the same legislators that say they want to keep the legislature out of local areas of control,’ [USD 101 Superintendent Steve] Woolf continued. ‘This is a local control issue. This is not a legislative issue. I am embarrassed they are taking that on rather than showing trust in the local school board elected by the people. To do this makes a mockery of our school system.’

“Reading off a list of bills the Kansas Legislature is considering regarding education this session, Woolf said it would appear that some legislators have an agenda to tear down public education, leaving the option to privatize it, just like the state has done with other areas, such as foster care and Healthwave.

“Kansas once boasted a public school system that was something to be proud of, but in the last few years the Legislature has continued to attack it and tear it down, Woolf said…

“’Unless a number of parents become active in opposing these bills, I don’t know who else is going to oppose this legislative offense,’ [Oswego USD 504 Superintendent Terry] Karlin said.”
