Game On testified in the House Education Committee in opposition to House Bill 2166 which would require every district to offer a financial literacy course and would require every Kansas high school student to pass a semester-long course during their junior or senior year to graduate high school. Although financial literacy is an important skill, it is the role of the State Board of Education to set state standards and the role of local boards of education to decide how to implement them. This is not the role of the legislature.
Additionally, requiring another class for Kansas high school juniors and seniors limits their ability to take other courses they would like or may need. Mandating another class also causes staffing and scheduling problems for smaller districts.
We urge you to contact the members of the House Education Committee and ask them to vote no on HB 2166. The emails of the committee members are Steve.Huebert@house.ks.gov, Brenda.Dietrich@house.ks.gov,
