Voting for the constitutional amendment to force the election of our Supreme Court Justices was a vote against public education. The courts have been absolutely essential in protecting public education funding in our state, and legislators cannot have been ignorant of that. It was not a vote to give the people a voice-it was a vote to allow our justices to be bought by dark money interests that oppose public education. And the courts are supposed to be the one branch of government that does not respond to the will of the people but protects rights under the law even when that is unpopular or opposed by those with money. It will have to go to a vote by the people, but again the game has been rigged, setting up a vote in the August primary, when a lot of public school patrons are on summer vacation and when the most far right wing segment of our population shows up the strongest. We’re sure leadership put pressure on legislators, but your Representatives were elected to represent their constituents rather than bow to pressure from leadership. This passed with the minimum number of votes required-any of the yes votes could have prevented its passage.
Please thank the following who voted to protect public education from a dark money takeover of our Supreme Court: Alcala, Amyx, Ballard, Borjon, Brownlee Paige, Carlin, Carmichael, Carr, Curtis, Featherston, Haskins, Helgerson, Hoye, Martinez, McDonald, Melton, Meyer, Miller, Mosley, Neighbor, Ohaebosim, Oropeza, Osman, Ousley, Poskin, Roeser, S. Ruiz, Sawyer, Sawyer Clayton, Schlingensiepen, Schreiber, Simmons, Stogsdill, Vaughn, Weigel, Wikle, Willcott, Winn, Woodard, Xu.
