USD 111 considers closure of school after allotment

From Doniphan West USD 111.

As you have probably already heard, Governor Brownback recently released his proposed budget for K-12 Education and to Higher Education. Part of that budget that directly affects our district includes a 1.5% cut from the K-12 Base State Aid per Pupil. This change will most likely continue into next year’s budget and will negatively impact the amount of dollars we have to spend on education.

During the board meeting last night, the board discussed how to address any cuts to this year and the future years’ budgets that will have the lowest impact on our students and their education.

After much discussion, the Board of Education directed the Superintendent to publish a ‘Notice of Hearing’ on the closing of the Doniphan West Primary School in Highland. The public hearing will be held March 9, 2015 at 6:00 pm in the Doniphan West High School commons. There are many factors that brought the board to this option and we welcome you to contact a board member if you have questions and/or to attend the public hearing.
All current school boards across the state are being forced to make some difficult financial decisions regarding the Governor’s cuts to education. The USD 111 Board of Education is proud to represent this district comprised of great teachers, staff, and community supporting strong local education for our youth. It is our hope that during these difficult decisions, the focus remains on what is best for our students, they are our future.
