Today the House will probably vote on the tax bill the Senate passed yesterday. Please contact your Representative and ask him or her to vote no. They won’t be able to amend the bill at this point; it’s just a yes or no vote. The 117-page bill is problematic in many ways. It doesn’t address the fundamental tax imbalance which will result in additional problems next year when there aren’t as many funds to sweep; expands the corporate tax credit “scholarship” program; includes a “ratchet” which will prevent adequate recovery of school and other funding; removes the sales tax exemption for schools and other entities with the promise it will likely be restored by a commission that will look at the sales tax exemptions (sorry, but we’re running a little low on trust right now); and raises the sales tax rates among other things.
