We were extremely disappointed in the draft report of the K-12 Student Success Committee. Here’s another example of what was wrong with it and why we are left with the impression that they are failing to listen to the people who actually understand public education funding.
“The tabled first draft of the K-12 Student Success Interim Study Committee’s report called federal education funding a ‘burden’ and ‘cost driver’ because it can obligate the state to do data collection, testing and record keeping. The report suggested Kansas ‘study the receiving of federal funds to determine the cost-benefit ratio.’ Especially with districts cutting back to cope with the state’s two-year block grant plan, though, it seems unlikely that Kansas is in any position to forgo federal education funding, which amounted to $510 million for 2014-15, or about $1,100 per student.”
