Kansans for Fair Courts on merit selection

Governor Brownback would like a court system that doesn’t rule against the state in school funding cases. We are grateful for an independent judiciary. Public school supporters need to be Kansas court supporters. Here we’re sharing a Facebook post from Kansans for Fair Courts

In response to Governor Sam Brownback’s remarks about our state court system in last night’s State of the State address, Kansans for Fair Courts Executive Director Ryan Wright issued the following statement:

“Once again, Governor Brownback is trying to deceive us when it comes to his political agenda for our courts. Tonight he implied that Kansas stands alone in its use of a merit selection system for its highest court, in an attempt to undermine support for a system that has helped keep money and politics out of Kansas courts for decades. In fact, Kansas is one of two dozen states that use the merit process, including four of our own border states – Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, and Missouri. We just can’t trust what the Governor says about our courts, or what his agenda is when it comes to courts. We say to the Governor: stop trying to insert politics into our courts.”

Kansas currently uses a merit selection system for appointing judges to its Supreme Court. Kansans for Fair Courts believes the merit system is an effective and time-tested process that has helped insulate judicial selection in the state from financial and political pressures that endanger fair and impartial courts.
