KASB Tallman Education Report – Schools Underfunded by $867 Million since 2009

Sen. Wagle and Rep. Ryckman claimed Deputy Education Commissioner allocated more funding than provided for under statute when Mr. Dennis calculated the line of best fit for transportation costs as instructed by a legislative leader at the time. Sen. Denning has now asserted that districts should pay their “extra” funding back to the state, though the LPA audit this all came out of concluded districts’ costs are not being covered by state funding. Here is additional context you won’t hear from them.

“The Kansas Legislature has underfunded school finance formulas in state law by $867 million since 2009, according to data prepared by the Kansas Legislative Research Department.

“This shortfall in funding is not related to school finance cost studies. Rather, it is a comparison between what the Legislature has adopted for school funding in state law by legislative enacted, and what has actually been appropriated and provided to school districts.”
