Game On Publishes Candidate Code of Conduct

Last week we released our rosters of public education supporters, as we have done in the past several election cycles. This year we also sent candidates on our rosters our new candidate code of conduct, which represents our effort to promote civility in politics. We believe in the importance rejecting both the positions and tactics of those who would seek to undermine public education. Additionally, an important goal of our organization is to increase participation by average citizens in the political process, and we believe dishonesty during election campaigns works against this goal. So, we are asking candidates on our roster to abide by this code of conduct, and we are happy to report that thus far, it has been positively received.

Game On for Kansas Schools Candidate Code of Conduct

Game On for Kansas Schools is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization of parents, teachers, and concerned community members. We believe that a high-quality public education is the right of all Kansas students. We advocate for Kansas schools to ensure they have the resources necessary to deliver that education to all Kansas students, and we inform communities about issues and legislation affecting students in Kansas.

In addition to our evidence-based advocacy, Game On challenges those who regularly offer distorted or misleading information. Game On believes in the importance of rejecting both the positions and tactics of those who would seek to undermine public education. An important goal of our organization is to increase participation by average citizens in the political process, and we believe dishonesty during election campaigns works against this goal.

During the election cycle, Game On publishes candidate rosters. Your inclusion on Game On’s rosters as either a “Top Recruit” or a member of the “Varsity Squad,” is based upon your public education policy positions. Additionally, we expect the candidates we place on our rosters to avoid the dishonesty and rhetoric that cheapens and denigrates public discourse. This document outlines our code of conduct policy for candidates on our rosters. Failing to abide by the requirements listed below may result in your removal from our rosters or the movement of your name to a list of candidates “Benched for Academic Ineligibility.”

Requirements

  1. Candidates and their campaigns will not engage in deceit, fraud or behavior that negatively reflects on Game On.
  1. Candidates and their campaigns will not egregiously misrepresent the public education positions of other candidates in a way that would make the public question why Game On has named them to our rosters. This applies to all written communications, electronic communications (including social media), public statements, or actions.
  1. Candidates and their campaigns will disavow or reject outside groups that make egregious misrepresentations of other candidates’ position in a way that would make the public question why Game On has named them to our rosters. This applies to all written communications, electronic communications (including social media), public statements, or actions.
  1. If a candidate becomes aware of communication or behavior (written, electronic, public statements, etc.) from or by another candidate that they feel should disqualify them from receiving Game On’s support, they should directly communicate that action to Game On so we may decide how to address the concern.  Game On commits to communicating with candidates regarding their concerns.
  1. Candidates should be positive about Game On in print and in their public statements. Candidates and campaigns that publicly attack the credibility of Game On should not expect the public support of the organization they are attacking.

Game On seeks to endorse candidates who will not only rigorously advocate for public education and our Kansas students but candidates who run campaigns with integrity. Game On is grateful for those candidates who conduct themselves in accordance with this policy.
