We’re sharing from a Facebook post by our friends at Stand Up Blue Valley:
How many times have we heard certain legislators complain about the “cycle of litigation” and say they want the Kansas Supreme Court out of the school funding issue?
Well, it’s time for those legislators to vote for exactly that. Last year’s School Funding Formula, passed by both legislative chambers and signed by then-Gov. Colyer, needs *only* an inflation adjustment to get the litigation over and done with. Governor Kelly’s plan, developed with input from the State Board of Education and the Kansas Department of Education, and supported by the Blue Valley School District – passed the Senate and needs to be passed by the House.
Unfortunately, the House K12 Education Budget Committee has spent this legislative session playing political games. Instead of following the Senate’s lead, the House committee passed 2 bad bills to be voted on this Monday! Neither of these bills solves the very simple matter of adjusting the Funding Formula for inflation, and both cause more trouble. We need the Governor’s plan to be introduced and passed. It’s not quite that simple, since it didn’t get out of committee – but it can be done.
We urge Representatives to vote NO on the bad bills and YES on whatever version of the Governor’s plan becomes available to vote on. End the cycle of litigation. Fund our schools now and in the coming years. Get ‘er done.
