ACTION ALERT – Tax Credit Scholarship Expansion Attempt

TWO UPDATES:
First, if the tax credit scholarship expansion moves forward, it will probably be through SB 382. SB 382 was the version of the Fort Leavenworth capital improvement state aid fix the Senate passed. The House K-12 Education Budget Committee (our least favorite committee this session) amended SB 382 to make it more like HB 2526 and then added the HB 2465 tax credit scholarship expansion into SB 382. That means HB 2465-the subject of our Action Alert earlier this week-and SB 382 are basically the same. The difference is that SB 382 (in its original Fort-Leavenworth-fix form) already passed the Senate, so if the House passes SB 382, it can go back to the Senate for a mere up-or-down vote. (Some senators may not be happy about that, and it might not work, but still…)

Second, we’re hearing that neither HB 2465 nor SB 382 have been brought to the floor of the House because they don’t currently have the votes to pass. That’s a good thing, but that could change. Stay vigilant, and if you think your Representative might not know how strongly you feel about tax credit scholarships, you should let him or her know now. There is also a distinct possibility that the legislature may go on its spring break early due to the coronavirus. Stay tuned…
