Republican representative facing political fallout from vote against flat tax

It is so important to know how legislators are voting and to make sure your friends and neighbors do, too, and to thank legislators for their good votes. We doubt a single legislator has a majority of constituents who would benefit from a flat tax, but defying Americans for Prosperity or the Kansas Chamber on tax or education policy comes at a cost including removal from committee seats and getting money spent on opponents.

“House Speaker Dan Hawkins moved Jacobs off the House Federal & State Affairs Committee, which handles some of the biggest social issues addressed in the Legislature…

“Jacobs said it was disappointing that leadership is “playing spiteful politics by trying to strong arm me by taking away my committee assignment.”

“They have just shown their true colors of always catering to the lobbyists instead of serving the people,” he said.

Jacobs was at the center of Kansas politics earlier this week when he joined with four other Republicans who voted against the Republican tax bill, which has dominated the 2024 session of the Legislature.

He along with the Republicans Reps. Mike Dodson of Manhattan, Randy Garber of Sabetha, Mark Schreiber of Emporia and Dave Younger of Ulysses voted against overriding the governor’s veto of the bill…

“Both Americans for Prosperity and the Kansas Chamber of Commerce expressed displeasure with votes cast by Jacobs and Garber.

“Whether Representatives, realize it or not – or like it, or not – the people of Kansas are paying attention to their actions,”said Elizabeth Patton, state director of AFP Kansas…

“They should be aware that actions have consequences in a variety of ways.”
