SB 87 Tax Credit Scholarship Update

The Senate passed ANOTHER expansion of the tax credit “scholarship” program on Wednesday, February 19th, and while it was falsely claimed that opponents didn’t talk about students, they soundly rejected proposed amendments that would increase transparency and oversight over the program or ensure that the low-income students that were originally the justification for this program actually have the ability to use it. There hasn’t even been an amendment to reduce the SCHOOL choice that is a feature not a bug for its proponents. We’ve shared this before, but this is an image of an actual application from a school already eligible to participate in the Kansas tax credit “scholarship” program, and most participating schools have similar language. Tell us this program isn’t really focused on helping struggling students without telling us this program isn’t really focused on helping struggling students. They could require participating schools to accept everyone who applies and retain everyone who is accepted, but they don’t. They leave those kids to the public schools.
