Candidates Misuse NAEP Data

We are once again seeing candidates for Kansas Governor, State Board of Education and House misusing testing data, sometimes improperly citing NAEP statistics to disparage Kansas student achievement. They either don’t know or are intentionally lying by conflating NAEP proficient with grade level. We’re not sure which is worse but we are sure that we see this misuse most often by candidates who do not support our public schools. We all want our schools to improve but we caution against candidates who spend their campaign resources criticizing public school student achievement and urging support for vouchers. Even when they don’t explicitly support vouchers in their campaign materials they are again either intentionally or wrecklessly contributing to the effort to erode support for public schools and increase support for vouchers.
