From Johnson County Post
“BREAKING NEWS: Four Johnson County school districts are banding together to explore possibly suing the state of Kansas over what they call a years-long failure to adequately fund special education services.
Blue Valley, De Soto, Olathe and Shawnee Mission — serving more than 83,000 students combined — signed a formal agreement today establishing what they are calling the Kansas Public School Funding Coalition.
The districts say Kansas has not met its own legal requirement to fund special education at 92% of excess costs for more than 15 years, forcing local districts and taxpayers to cover the gap. In the last school year alone, the four districts say they spent over $119 million in local funds to make up for the state’s shortfall.
The districts have issued a request for proposals for legal counsel as it evaluates next steps toward litigation against the state.
