Vouchers Create a New Taxpayer Subsidy

Vouchers create a new taxpayer subsidy for private schools and people who can already afford private school and allow the state to pay a relatively small per pupil figure to abandon poorer children. This piece by Bruce Baker highlights the abandonment. It also notes two kinds of experiments resulting in massive failures for children who get just one opportunity to obtain a K-12 education-tax policy experiments and voucher experiments. If we get Ty Masterson as governor we’ll get both and our children will face devastating losses.

“The 18-year-old is, in the Kansas panel’s words, a subject of an experiment with no recourse from its failure. The difference is that in Kansas, the state was cutting the budget of institutions still obligated to teach her. In Arizona and Florida, the state has written itself out of that obligation and handed the obligation, and the money, to someone the law does not hold to any measurable standard.”
