Today we are highlighting our lists of legislators “benched for academic ineligibility.” The obligation to support public education is in Article 6 of the Kansas Constitution, yet every incumbent on our bench voted to support public schools, less than 20% of the time on bills we tracked over the past 2 years. This included votes on vouchers, funding, and recognizing the authority of local school boards and the Kansas State Board of Education. Everyone on the bench voted to expand our state voucher program and opt in to the federal voucher program, and voted for the constitutional amendment to change judicial selection, which we showed was directly tied to funding for public schools. All but the asterisked ones also voted against modest increases to special education funding on more than one occasion. Yet, many of them publicly claim to support public education. If these are your current legislators, you need to be talking to them, and the candidates who are challenging them, about their positions on these important issues.
