Governor Brownback calls upon Save the Children international charity organization to help with his reading initiative. Really.

“Children like Lucky are why we’re dedicated to helping children in need. Save the Children works in the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities in countries from America to Zimbabwe — saving one child at a time. Sadly, we know firsthand that far too many children aren’t getting the help they need.” (Save the Children website).

Wednesday, Brownback visited after-school programs to improve reading in Iola and Pittsburg, which have partnered with the relief group best known for its TV campaigns urging Americans to sponsor aid for vulnerable children in developing countries.

Relying on charity organizations to perform the state’s obligation of educating our children seems less than ideal. Can Kansas not take care of its own children?
