Wichita Eagle Article: No Tax Increase for KS schools, GOP Leaders Say

Rep. Ryckman and Sens. Wagle, Pyle and Denning need to recognize the necessity of adequate school funding rather than continuing to avoid providing it. We agree with Sen. Skubal quoted here: “The Supreme Court did its job and now the Legislature needs to do its job, he said. “‘I’m not going to defy the Supreme Court,’ Skubal said. ‘And somehow, someway, we’re going to come up with some money.’” http://amp.kansas.com/news/politics-government/article189906674.html?__twitter_impression=true Originally posted to Facebook on 12/15/17...

Kansas as a Cautionary Tale

As we move past the 2017 legislative session, it’s important to remember where we were during the years of the tax cut experiment. Listen to this NPR/Morning Edition audio article and discussion with Martin Stessman, superintendent for Shawnee Heights United School District in Techumseh, KS and Melissa Rooker, Kansas House Representative. https://www.npr.org/2017/12/13/570387479/kansas-2012-tax-cut-experiment-could-serve-as-a-cautionary-tale?utm_campaign=storyshare&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social Originally posted to Facebook on 12/13/17...

Editorial: Why Bypassing the Supreme Court is a Bad Idea

We agree with this editorial. “The state Supreme Court is doing its job here. It determined in October, without attaching a price tag, that the state continues to inadequately and unfairly fund education throughout Kansas public school systems. The additional funding likely to be necessary will put a hurt on state finances, but that’s not the Supreme Court’s fault… Five justices were on the ballot in 2016 and all retained… Legislators should focus efforts on the beginning of the 2018 session and solving the state’s many problems without changing the constitution.” http://amp.kansas.com/opinion/editorials/article188198669.html?__twitter_impression=true Originally posted to Facebook 12/6/17...
