“Kansas’ controversial new school finance law and the cuts it made to state aid for poorer school districts are unconstitutional, a panel of judges ruled Friday, [June 26, 2015] ordering lawmakers just wrapping up a record-long legislative session to inject more money into public schools… “Though the state had argued that its support for schools continues to rise annually, the judges dismissed the idea that the state’s increased pension spending — which school districts can’t touch for their own daily operating needs — absolves it of any responsibility to increase other types of school funding. “The block grant...

Disconnect between BV citizens and legislators

Leave a Comment Education funding remains a concern
“Brownback repeatedly touted K-12 education during the news conference, but would not definitively say that cuts to K-12 education would be off the table. “’I didn’t hear a specific answer,’ said Scott Rothschild, spokesman for the Kansas Association of School Boards. ‘Our position is we need a sustainable, reliable source of tax revenue, and we’ll see if this does it or not.’ “’Schools have been on high alert for years. There’s all this talk about was our funding increased or was it decreased. Schools are dealing with severe funding challenges,’ Rothschild said. ‘Our funding is not keeping up...
