Review of ALEC report card on American education

The National Education Policy issues critical review of ALEC’s latest “Report Card on American Education: Ranking State K-12 Performance, Progress, and Reform” which “draws on ratings from market-oriented advocacy groups to grade states in areas such as support for charter schools, availability of vouchers, and permissiveness for homeschooling. The authors contend that these grades are based on ‘high quality’ research demonstrating that the policies for which they award high grades will improve education for all students. Governor’s budget cuts education funding even deeper

Catch-up payments on KPERS and new capital projects don’t change these numbers. The Governor’s proposed budget & claims of protecting Kansas’ K-12 funding fall far short of the investments needed in our state’s economic future. Tax cuts stand in the way of boosting Kansas’ lagging education funding. Instead of experimenting with tax cuts, Kansas should be renewing its investment in our education system, the asset that is most important to the state’s long term prosperity....

Misleading ads designed to undermine confidence in public schools to promote school “choice” and continued underfunding of traditional public schools

KPI (ALEC/AFP’s Kansas relative) is proceeding with step one of the ALEC playbook-undermine confidence in the existing public school system. That lays the groundwork for step 2 which is diverting public funds to private schools, online schools and a distorted version of charters.
