 The corporate tax “scholarship” ALEC model bill passed the Kansas House Education Committee before being narrowly defeated on the House floor during the regular legislative session. It will be back next year. ALEC, big money and public education “reforms” as seen in parent trigger

This is a long piece but it connects the dots between ALEC, big money and public education “reform” in a specific example. Parents in Florida are facing a similar battle with a parent trigger bill in the legislature despite being opposed by the state PTA and parent advocacy groups. Have spent the day with Kansas Teacher of the Year award winners along with Rep.’s Rooker, Clayton, and Perry touring some of the amazing and innovative programs in the SM School District. My comment at the end of the day was, “Why do we need legislation for innovative schools in Kansas when we have them already?” I was deeply impressed with the opportunities our students have from kindergarten through senior year in high school. Governor Brownback calls upon Save the Children international charity organization to help with his reading initiative. Really.

“Children like Lucky are why we’re dedicated to helping children in need. Save the Children works in the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities in countries from America to Zimbabwe — saving one child at a time.
