Bad news from Topeka

From one of our SMSD area Reps: The race to the bottom is on. Vouchers (oops, I mean scholarship tax credits) just passed out of the House education committee despite my best efforts. For the record, I voted no. To compound the problem, it was amended into a bill the Senate already voted on so it bypasses a vote in the Senate and heads straight to conference committee. Urge NO vote on House Bill 2400 in the House Education Committee

The House Education Committee will be addressing HB2400, the corporate tax scholarship (new wording for voucher) bill. We find it telling the supporters testifying for the bill were a Catholic schools representative and Kansas Chamber of Commerce. We have nothing against Catholic schools-we just don’t think public school funding should be diverted to them. Charter bill vote still looming in Senate Education Committee

We’ve seen what has happened in other states who have expanded charters. Charters siphon funds from our already-strapped public schools often cherry pick students, expel students and fail to outperform true public schools. They have recently proven to be a favorite mechanism for those who seek to privatize public schools and a cash cow for those who seek to profit from it. There have also been a large number of scandals in charter schools across the country. Urge legislators to support the public schools we have!
