Declining Enrollment Requires Good Decision Makers

Game On team, please understand there is a nationwide population decline in school-age children, leading to declining enrollment in schools. Vouchers in Kansas would only add to this problem, and issues like the continued underfunding of special education also put extra financial pressures on our schools at a time when they can’t afford it. School closures and boundary changes are coming, and we hope that affected families work with their school boards rather than treating them with hostility for a problem they did not create. Here in Kansas, we continue to face a legislature that would prefer not to adequately fund our public schools and would be very happy to see conflict between communities and their school boards. Please don’t let these issues turn into opportunities for flipping school boards to extremist candidates or undermining support for public education and increasing the drive for vouchers. Instead, advocate for good decisionmaking processes on your school boards, and elect legislators and a governor who will help school districts manage these challenges rather than adding to them.
