Ty Masterson’s Abysmal Record on School Funding

The future of public education in Kansas is on the ballot. Ty Masterson has repeatedly shown us he would underfund public schools and hand over taxpayer dollars to private schools with no oversight and no guardrails. Cindy Holscher has been an advocate for public education for longer than she has been in the Senate

From Take Back Kansas

“Ty Masterson helped create Kansas’ school funding crisis. Now he wants to be governor.

He voted for the Brownback tax cuts, then became Senate budget chair as Kansas schools faced an estimated $550 million funding shortage as a result of the Brownback tax cuts. Instead of closing the gap, he backed another $54 million cut and block grants that froze school funding for two years as school costs grew.

Then he paid $2.6 million to hire a consultant who recommended draining school districts’ rainy day funds. Masterson followed their contrived recommendation with a proposed bill to cut state aid based on those reserves and fought efforts to increase school funding.

Since he became Senate president, Kansas has fallen roughly $760 million short of federally required special education funding. Districts are required by law to provide those services, so local communities cover the gap by increasing property taxes.

This is the school funding record Masterson is taking into the governor’s race. If elected governor, Masterson will undoubtedly wield his power to make massive cuts to public schools. Share it so more Kansans know.
